A native of Portland, Oregon, Tyson began his formal music training at the age of twelve. Receiving both classical and jazz instruction on the saxophone, Tyson grew up performing in school bands and the church. In 2003, he was selected to play in the Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP), Portland’s premiere youth orchestra.
